Text: Ephesians 5:11-14 King James Version (KJV)
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
Introduction: Luke 8:14
“And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.”-
Amplifying Bible
Jesus explains that the seed is those who hear the gospel and allow it to make changes in their life but value worldly riches too much to continue. The word translated “unfruitful” refers to a situation that doesn’t bring the results it should.
Unfruitful Works of Darkness
The “unfruitful works of darkness” produce no value or contribution to the person or others. They lead to destruction. … no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness.” That means that when we walk as we should we will not find ourselves encouraging or excusing sin. Paul’s command here implies that sin is a waste of time and associated with darkness, which is opposed to the light of those living for Christ. The second command is a contrast to merely avoiding sin. This instruction means to unmask or point out what is sinful.
If you are not using your talents for Him, you are unfruitful. Also, if you are not living to please God and to do His will, you are unfruitful. Unfruitful means that the Word does not produce any change in your live.
Galatians 5:19
“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,”
To expose unfruitful works of darkness means the uncomfortable work of confronting them, rebuking them, and showing them to be wrong. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. Christians should be concerned about those in darkness and pray for revival so the church can share the light and knowledge of God with them.
Fellowship means sharing, or having something in common with somebody else. Common participation involves giving and receiving. Christian fellowship seriously involves both aspects. Christian fellowship is vertical as well as horizontal.
Have no fellowship: means we should NOT engage in anything that is associated with the works of Satan or his angels. when we walk as we should we will not find ourselves encouraging or excusing sin.
Types of Darkness: the darkness of shame and isolation, the darkness of enemy oppression and the darkness of hopelessness. Darkness symbolizes the spiritual condition of those separated from God and immersed in sin. The biblical meanings of darkness include ignorance, evil, death, and chaos.
Conclusion: we not only share the gospel with one another, but we also share our lives with one another because we have a deep care and love for one another. _ Pastor Ukachukwu Nwachukwu, Senior Pastor Divine Counseling and Prayer Ministry
